The photographic genre that draws me most is social documentary. I am able to make close connections with subjects who are as human as I am, but with different emotions and ideas. Regular people always have something to say, immediately and irrespective of politics. They welcome me, a photographer, and my camera more easily into their midst than they would any politician. I've learned my greatest lessons from my subjects, not in any university classroom. Each of my photographs depicts a corner of the lives of these people, along with all of their sadness and joy, their mourning and celebration, and the daily struggles they face. I use very little equipment while shooting because I feel that to use more would prevent me from creating close relationships with my subjects. Photojournalism has given me the opportunity to meet and work in proximity to politicians whose decisions influence the lives of the people of this world. It has brought me to a better understanding of the global society that surrounds me.
